Frequently Ask Questions

What can I use Timber Cladding For?

Due to it adaptability there are thousand of situation which lend themselves to cladding with timber rather than PVC or alternative materials. Typical uses :- Summer houses, Green houses, Conservatory, boat building, garden offices/workshops, door frames, windows frames, supporting timber, decking, decking rails, Yorkshire Boarding, raised beds, trellis, fencing bee hives (Cedar) and as the traditional cladding of barns, houses and offices.

Softwood or Hardwood which is better for cladding?

That's a hard one, which is often solved by personal choice. Generally all types of cladding profiles can be produced in soft or hardwood, it is down to the look and profile of the timber you chose. Make sure the timber you use is durable (see below) and suitable for external use. Really it's a very personal choice but here goes with a answer:- Hardwood cladding tends to be Denser, Darker, and closer grained than softwood cladding which produces a more defined product.

Softwood cladding?

Home Grown Western Red Cedar and Home Grown Larch are among the most popular softwoods used in the UK today. Both these have a natural resistance to decay and moisture absorption making them durable. They can be left untreated in the majority of installation.

What fixings should when installing timber cladding?

Because of the natural oils we recommend stainless steel screws/nails.

What type of timber cladding are there?

Profile cladding (planed and therefore smother to the touch = contemporary look) e.g. PTGV, T&G, Shiplap, Loglap, Shadow Gap, Rain Screen. Sawn timber (rougher = traditional look) e.g. Waney edge, Feather Edge and Square Edge planks. These are the most common types of cladding.

What the best cladding for internal timber cladding?

The type of Timber you choose for your cladding is a totally personal choice. The colour and profile of your cladding are the most important factors to consider. However, should you be painting or staining the colour of the timber becomes less of an issue.

What stains, varnish or waxes can I use on internal timber cladding?

For a non-yellowing UV protection, we would recommend OSMO unique non – yellowing UV interior protection and for a paint we would recommend any good water or oil-based paint.

Timber Durability

When selecting your timber type for your project it is worth taking in to consideration BS EN 350 timber durability class.

Durability is the ability of a species to resist decay either naturally or through preservatives. The Class is based on the ability of the heartwood (inner part of the tree) to resist fungal decay. The sapwood (the living outermost portion of the tree)is considered not durable and should not be used for external projects without preservative.

BS EN 350 has 5 classes of durability they are:-

Class 1 to 3 can be left as untreated timber, a natural ageing process will accrue e.g. Cedar will turn a grey colour. Class 4 and 5 will need to be treated with preservatives.
